70% of SEO is on-page work. What does this mean specifically, and how do you optimize your titles, meta descriptions, headings, and content?

What is On-page SEO?

SEO can be divided into three main areas: technical SEO (speed, structure), on-page SEO (the content itself and the page's structure), and off-page SEO (external links). Of these, on-page SEO is what you can completely control yourself.

And good news: this accounts for 70% of your SEO success. If your on-page is done well, no magic is needed.

The 8 On-page Elements That Matter

1. Title Tag

The blue link in Google's search results. 50-60 characters, keyword at the beginning, brand name at the end.

Bad: Homepage | Somos Media Good: Professional Website Design, Somos Media

2. Meta Description

The short description below the title. 150-160 characters, encourages visitors to click. It's not a direct ranking factor, but CTR (Click-Through Rate) is.

3. H1 Main Heading

One H1 per page, which clearly describes what the content is about. It should contain the main keyword.

4. Heading Hierarchy (H2, H3, H4)

Logical structure. H2 for main sections, H3 for subsections. Don't skip levels (don't jump from H1 to H4).

5. URL Structure

Short, descriptive URL. /seo-guide/ is much better than /?p=4837.

6. Internal Links

From every new article, link to 2-5 older articles, and vice versa. This helps Google understand your site's structure and guides visitors deeper into your content.

7. Image Alt Text

Every image should have descriptive alt text. No need to stuff it with keywords, just describe what's in the image naturally.

8. Content Quality

Most important: does it truly answer the visitor's question? Is it longer than the competition, but not just word salad? Does it contain fresh data?

The Rule of Keyword Placement in 2026

In the past: "Stuff the text with keywords."

Today: Google understands synonyms and semantic fields. If your topic is "weboldal készítés", Google considers "honlap készítés", "web design", "site building" to be the same.

Rule: write naturally for humans, and the keywords will automatically be where they need to be.

The 6 Most Common On-page Mistakes

  1. Empty meta description, Google will randomly cut text from your content in this case
  2. Multiple H1s on one page, especially common with older WP themes
  3. Keyword stuffing, outdated and can lead to penalties
  4. Missing alt text, both accessibility AND SEO suffer
  5. No internal linking, every page remains an island
  6. Thin content, it's hard to rank well for serious keywords with under 200 words

A Quick Audit You Can Do Today

Take your 10 most important pages and check:

  • Unique title on every page?
  • Unique meta description?
  • One H1?
  • Logical H2/H3 structure?
  • At least 3-5 internal links?
  • Alt text on every image?

If these are in place, Google will understand and value your site much better.
