Local SEO: How to Rank in Google Maps Top Results?

If you have a physical store or provide a service in a specific area, local SEO can be more valuable than traditional SEO. Here are the most important steps.

Why is Local SEO Important?

If you are a dentist in Budapest, you don't need to rank for "dentist", but rather for "dentist District VIII". These searches are dominated by Google Maps and local results, and entirely different rules apply there.

Concrete data: 76% of "service + city" type searches result in a visit to the business within 24 hours.

The 3 Main Local Ranking Factors

1. Relevance

How well does your Google Business Profile match the search query? (Category, description, services, photos.)

2. Distance

How far is your physical address from the searcher?

3. Prominence

How many people are talking about you, reviews, mentions, links, how old is the company.

The Google Business Profile (GBP), The Most Important Tool

Everyone can use this for free, yet 60-70% of international businesses fill it out incorrectly.

Fill it out PROFESSIONALLY:

  • Accurate category, not general ("business"), but specific ("endodontist")
  • Secondary categories, everything you relevantly offer
  • Detailed description, 750 characters, with keywords but naturally
  • Opening hours, accurate, including holidays
  • Phone number, local (+36-1, +36-2..., not +36-30 is ideal for a service)
  • Website, always point to the correct subpage
  • Services, list everything, with prices if possible
  • Photos, minimum 10 high-quality photos, new ones monthly
  • Posts, 2-4 per month, like a mini Facebook

Reviews

This is a key factor. Don't just passively wait for them:

  • Ask for them with an automated email after purchase / service
  • Place a QR code at the reception / on the receipt
  • Always respond to them, both positive and negative
  • Never respond angrily to a negative review, other potential customers will read it too

Goal: at least 30+ reviews, 4.5+ average. With significantly fewer, it's difficult to get into the top results.

NAP Consistency

The Name, Address, Phone must appear EXACTLY the same everywhere:

  • On your website
  • On your Google Business Profile
  • On your Facebook page
  • On local directories (cegxpress, telefonkonyv, etc.)
  • On industry-specific sites

Even a typo can confuse Google.

Local Content on Your Website

Create location-specific pages if you operate in multiple locations:

  • /dentist-budapest/
  • /dentist-debrecen/

Each local page should include:

  • The local address, phone number
  • Photos of the local team
  • Local references, case studies
  • Directions, embedded map

What to Expect?

  • Visible improvement from GBP optimization within 1-2 months
  • Ranking among the top 3 local results is realistic within 3-6 months in a moderately competitive category
  • Continuous effort is needed, this is not a one-off project

The good news: while classic SEO takes a minimum of 6-12 months, local SEO is much faster.

This is what we do every day: SEO service.
