SEO Automation: What We Automate, and What We Still Do by Hand

We automated the SEO of our own webshops step by step and turned it into Vistobi. Here is what is worth automating, what still needs a person, and how to choose SEO automation software without losing control.

3 levelsBlog autopilot: off, write for approval, write and publishVistobi

SEO automation sounds like a button that does your SEO for you. In our experience it is something smaller and more useful: software that does the checking, the copying of numbers and the first drafts, so people can spend their time on decisions.

We are Somos Media, an agency that also runs its own webshops. Our Monday mornings used to go like this: open four Search Console accounts for our four Melini stores, copy numbers into a spreadsheet, check Merchant Center for disapproved products, look at rankings, write the to-do list. Most of that was copying, not thinking. We automated it bit by bit, and that work became Vistobi.

What is worth automating

TaskAutomate it?Why
Pulling data from Search Console, Analytics and the storeYes, fullyNobody should copy numbers by hand
Spotting problems: missing descriptions, disapproved products, pages losing clicksYesSoftware notices more, and every day
Rank tracking and watching competitorsYesIt is repetitive and only useful if it is regular
Drafting fixes: titles, descriptions, review repliesDraft yes, publish after approvalThe draft is fast; the judgement is yours
Blog articlesDraft yes; publishing depends on how much you trust the draftsBad content at scale hurts more than no content
Checking whether a change workedYesPeople forget to look back
Deciding prioritiesSoftware suggests, a person decidesIt knows the data, you know the business

What runs on its own in Vistobi

This is the part we use every day, on our own stores and for clients:

  • Every morning Google data refreshes, and on the Growth plan store orders sync once a day from WooCommerce or a Base44-built shop.
  • The Today list shows what needs attention, with a suggested fix next to each item.
  • Important alerts come by email, so you do not have to log in to find out something broke.
  • A weekly email, on Monday by default or daily if you prefer, compares the last seven days with the seven before.
  • Competitor watch reads up to five competitor websites once a month and tells you what they added.
  • Before and after: when you change a page, Vistobi compares its Search Console clicks for the same number of days before and after the change, 28 days by default.

Autopilot levels, and why everyone starts low

The blog autopilot has three levels per website:

  1. Off. You start articles yourself.
  2. Write, I approve. On the days you choose, Vistobi picks a topic from your own site's data and writes the article. It waits on your Today list and in your email.
  3. Write and publish. The article goes out on WordPress 24 hours after it is written. You get an email first and can stop it.

Unless you choose that third level, Vistobi never publishes anything on your website by itself. Social posts work the same way: an approved post can be scheduled automatically, or it can wait for you.

Vistobi does not push you up the levels either. It only offers the next step once you have shown you trust the drafts: after three social posts in a row approved without a single edit, it asks whether approved posts should be scheduled automatically. After two approved articles, it offers the blog autopilot in the "Write, I approve" mode.

That is the rule we use ourselves. Nothing goes live unseen until the drafts stop needing edits.

What we still do by hand

Some SEO work does not automate well, and we would be suspicious of any tool that claims otherwise:

  • Deciding what to rank for in a new country. For each Melini market we researched the words people actually use. Translating the keyword list would have been wrong.
  • Structure for large catalogues. For Agrider's catalogue of about 410 machines in five languages, we set the rules for titles and descriptions per machine type. Software applies the rules; people decide them.
  • Migrations and redesigns. Redirect plans get checked by a person, line by line.
  • Content that needs real product knowledge. Buying guides, comparisons and anything a customer will rely on.
  • Links and PR. We do not automate outreach, and we do not buy links.

If you need these, that is what our SEO team at Somos Media does. We work in Vistobi too, so the automated part and our part sit in one place.

Local SEO automation

For local businesses, the most time-consuming part is usually Google Business Profile. Vistobi drafts replies to new Google reviews in your voice, short for positive reviews, calm and without asking anything of the customer for negative ones. It also suggests Business Profile posts and a better profile description. You approve each one. Pinterest can be connected for product pins.

Choosing SEO automation software: what we would check

When people ask us for the best SEO automation tool, our answer is that it depends on six questions:

  1. Does it explain why it suggests a change, or only give a score?
  2. Can it write the change into your site (for example into Yoast or Rank Math), or does it only report?
  3. Can you choose what needs your approval?
  4. Can you stop it with one click?
  5. Does it check afterwards whether the change worked?
  6. Is the cost predictable, with clear monthly limits?

Vistobi answers yes to all six, which is not a surprise, since we wrote the list after building it. Run the same list against any other tool you are considering.

Try it

Vistobi has a 7-day free trial. Plans start at €49 a month. Higher plans include more, for example more articles a month, and the Growth plan at €99 adds the store connection with orders and revenue. There is a 14-day money-back guarantee. Connect one website, leave the autopilot on "Write, I approve", and see whether the drafts are good enough for your store before you trust it with more.

Frequently asked questions

Data collection, problem spotting, rank tracking and first drafts can. Strategy, site structure for big catalogues, migrations and content that needs product knowledge still need a person.

Google's guidance says it judges content by whether it is helpful, not by how it was made, and it acts against pages mass-produced to manipulate rankings. That is why we keep a person approving drafts until they stop needing edits.

Only if you choose the "Write and publish" level for a website. Even then the article goes out 24 hours after it is written, you get an email first, and you can stop it.

Yes, 7 days. Plans start at €49 a month, with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Yes. With the free Vistobi Bridge plugin, approved titles and descriptions go into Yoast or Rank Math, and articles arrive in WordPress as drafts or, on the publish level, as posts.
