Customers no longer only search Google. They ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity "which accountant in Leeds is good for freelancers?" or "what is the best CRM for a small agency?", and they get one answer with a few names in it. If your business is not one of those names, you never hear about the lost customer.
An AI visibility tool shows you what those assistants say about you. This guide explains what such a tool should measure, how to run a quick check by hand, and how to choose one.
What "AI visibility" actually means
AI visibility is how often, and how well, AI assistants mention your brand when people ask questions you could answer. It has three parts:
- Presence: are you named at all for the questions your buyers ask?
- Position and tone: are you the first recommendation or a footnote, and is the description accurate?
- Sources: which web pages did the assistant lean on? Those pages, yours or others', shape the answer.
Classic rank tracking tells you where a page sits in Google. AI visibility tells you whether you are part of the answer itself. You need both, because AI assistants still draw much of their information from pages that rank well.
What a good AI visibility tool should do
| Capability | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Asks real buyer questions | Brand-name prompts flatter you. Category questions ("best X for Y") show the real picture. |
| Checks several assistants | ChatGPT and Gemini often answer differently. |
| Shows who is named instead | Your competitors in AI answers may differ from your Google competitors. |
| Lists the cited pages | You can only influence the sources you can see. |
| Repeats the check over time | Answers change; one snapshot is not a trend. |
| Turns findings into tasks | A chart without a next step does not change the answer. |
The last point is where most tools stop short. Knowing that you are missing from an answer is useful only if you also know which page to improve or which article to write.
How to check your AI visibility by hand in 15 minutes
You can get a first picture without any tool:
- Write five questions your buyers ask before they know your name, for example "best wedding photographer in Vienna for small weddings".
- Ask each question in ChatGPT and Gemini, in a fresh chat, and note who is named and in what order.
- Ask for sources ("which websites is this based on?") and note the pages.
- Ask about your brand directly ("what do you know about [brand]?") and check the facts: services, location, prices, founders.
- Compare with Google: search the same five questions and see whether the cited pages also rank there.
Patterns appear quickly. Often a competitor is named because one comparison article or directory lists them, or your own site never states plainly what you do and for whom.
How to improve what AI says about you
- State the facts plainly on your site. One clear sentence on what you do, for whom and where, on the home page and the about page.
- Answer the buyer questions with real content. Comparison pages, pricing explanations and "how to choose" guides are the pages assistants like to quote.
- Get listed where the sources are. If the same directory or review site keeps appearing in the sources, make sure you are on it, with correct details.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete. For local businesses it feeds many of the facts assistants repeat.
- Fix the basics of SEO. Pages that rank and get clicked are more likely to be read and cited.

Free vs paid AI visibility tools
Free checks are fine for a one-off picture of a few questions. Paid tools earn their price when you need repeat checks, several assistants, competitor tracking and history. For a small business, the deciding question is simple: does the tool also tell you what to do next, or only report what happened?
How Vistobi helps
Vistobi asks ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your buyers ask and shows whether you are named, who is recommended instead and which pages shaped the answer. Tobi, the Vistobi assistant, then tells you what to fix first, and the fixes land on the same Today list as your SEO tasks, blog articles and social posts. You can start with a free website check, no account needed.
Key takeaways
- AI visibility means being part of the answer, not just ranking in Google.
- Test category questions your buyers ask, not only your brand name.
- The cited sources tell you where to act.
- Choose a tool that turns findings into concrete tasks.
