MVP development: a working first version in weeks

An MVP is the smallest version of your product that real users can already use. How it differs from a prototype, how to cut it down, and how DogDietLab's first version was built in about two weeks.

In short

An MVP (minimum viable product) is the smallest version of your product that real users can already use, and that shows whether the idea works. It is not a demo or a mockup: it has sign-up, a database and the one core flow people will use it for.

With AI-assisted development, a focused MVP is ready in weeks. The first working version of our own product, DogDietLab, took about two weeks with one developer.

MVP, prototype or full product?

Does it work?no, or only on the surfaceyes, with real datayes

The most common mistake is calling it an MVP but expecting a full product. The other is building a prototype and trying to judge from it whether people would pay.

How to cut down your MVP

1. One user, one problem. Who is it for first? Not “everyone”, but one specific group.

2. One core flow. What is the one thing a user can complete from start to finish? Everything else serves that flow.

3. What stays out. Write down what is not included: admin reports, exports, multiple languages, notification settings. These can come once the core flow has proven itself.

4. What you measure. Sign-ups, returning use, paying users. If you do not measure, you will not find out whether it works.

Our article on the app development process explains how this becomes a feature list and a data model.

A real example: DogDietLab's first version

DogDietLab is our own AI app: it tells dog owners exactly what and how much to feed their dog, based on breed, weight, age and health.

The core flow was a free two-minute analysis: a status score from 1 to 100, an exact daily portion and a personalised food recommendation.

Built on top of it: user accounts (several dogs per owner), a daily log for energy, digestion and weight, an AI advisor with a review step by nutrition specialists, and a Pro subscription.

The numbers:

  • The first working version took about two weeks with one developer. With a classic stack we estimate two to three months.
  • At launch it had about 80 components, 12 back-end functions and 9 data types.
  • Today it runs in 24 regional versions in 12 languages.
  • A new feature typically goes from idea to live in two to four hours.

The point: the 24 regional versions were not part of the MVP. The MVP was the one analysis that proved dog owners would use it. Everything else was built on top.

What makes AI-assisted MVP development fast?

  • AI coding tools handle the routine work (forms, lists, saving data, login).
  • We ask the AI for small, specific steps, not the whole application at once.
  • Hosting, database and user accounts are built in, so there are no servers to assemble.
  • Planning, the data model and testing stay with people, and every piece of logic is checked by hand.

How much does MVP development cost?

With us, an MVP with custom logic, user accounts or AI starts from €2,000, with a fixed, itemised quote. The final price depends on the number of screens, roles and integrations. The full breakdown is here: How much does app development cost in 2026?

After the MVP

An MVP is not throwaway code. If the data model and permissions are built for real users from day one, you extend the MVP instead of rewriting it. That is how DogDietLab went from one analysis to 24 regional versions.

Frequently asked questions

What does MVP mean?

MVP stands for minimum viable product: the smallest version of a product that real users already use, and that shows whether it is worth developing further.

Can the MVP be paid?

Yes, and it should be if the goal is to find out whether people will pay. A simple subscription or one-off payment fits into a first version.

How long does it take to build an MVP?

A focused MVP with AI-assisted development usually takes a few weeks. DogDietLab's first version took about two weeks.
